A JUNIOR medical scientist who also happens to be Muslim has made the finals of Mr Pole Dance.
Osman Akkawy, 28, is one of 17 international dancers competing from 7pm tomorrow, May 22, at The Factory Theatre, Marrickville.
Bobbi's Pole Studio at Miranda and in the city is hosting the competition.
Mr Akkawy — stage name "Ozzie" — took up pole dancing 18 months ago at Bobbi's.
"There's certain things the Koran says you can and can't do," he said.
"But I regard pole dancing as a sport and I do it for sporting purposes."
"My friends laughed at first, lots are scientists and doctors, but they are supportive."
Mr Akkawy, who grew up in Kirrawee and works at St Vincent's Hospital, Darlinghurst, took up pole dancing to improve his flexibility and help with back problems.
Other competitors include a marine biologist, circus performer and a danseur who trained with the Israeli Classical Ballet Centre.
"I was quite surprised to be named a finalist as I don't think I'm as strong as some of the other guys and I had to ring Bobbi's to make sure they hadn't made a mistake," Mr Akkawy said.
