ON the same day he quit his job as a Quiksilver sales rep Cronulla surfer Dylan Hayllar was offered a position on the Australian team for the 2015 ISA World Surfing Games to be held at the world-class surf break of Playa Popoyo, Nicaragua.
A last-minute withdrawal from the National open age division team saw him join fellow South Coast surfer and now Cronulla resident, Hayden Blair, in the team that leaves for South America this Friday for the May 31-June 7 competition.
The 26-year-old Cronulla boardriders club competitor said the Surfing Australia selectors had chosen him for his consistent results.
He won the Cronulla Triple Crown over three contests and had an impressive showing in the Australian Boardriders battle for the Cronulla Sharks team.
Surfing Australia selectors were aware of Hayllar's strengths and felt he was a good fit for the team style format of the upcoming event in which top surfers from more than 25 countries compete for gold in both men's and women's divisions.
He joins teammates Blair, Jordy Lawler and Shane Holmes in the mens division and Codie Klein and Phillipa Anderson in the womens.
Hayllar has to fund his trip and is working seven days a week at Cronulla's Triple Bull surf shop to be able to make the most of the opportunity given to him.
Cronulla boardriders club will chip in to help him achieve this goal.
Elouera boardrider Glenn Pringle — who was recently named in the "Surf Retrospect" top 10 for Cronulla — said Hayllar "had better get used to the hassling and highly competitive nature of the South American surfers who hold the ISA World titles".
The International Surfing Association founded in 1964 is recognised by the International Olympic committee and membership includes the surfing National Federations of 86 countries on five continents.
It is presided over by Fernando Aguerre from Argentina.
The ISA promotes its World Championship events as the true "Olympics" of the sport.
