A policeman is undergoing surgery after being run over by a fellow officer during an operation on the north coast of NSW.
Coffs Harbour police were pursing a car, which is believed to have been driven by two juveniles, that failed to stop near Emerald Beach on Saturday afternoon.
The chase continued for nearly eight kilometres through the usually quiet beachside towns of Woolgoolga and Sandy Beach before police were forced to lay down spikes across the road on Solitary Islands Way.
After the spikes successfully stopped vehicle, the two female occupants ran into a nearby property.
While attempting to arrest the two females the officer was struck by a police vehicle and he sustained a number of injuries.
The 41-year-old officer, who was conscious and breathing, was taken to Coffs Harbour Health Campus, where he underwent surgery.
NSW police would not elaborate on the condition of the officer or give further details on how the incident occurred as the matter is now under investigation.
The two females were taken to Coffs Harbour Police Station and are currently assisting police with their inquiries.
