The new $2.9 million multi-sport, all-weather synthetic turf fields at Kareela Oval were officially opened by Sutherland Shire mayor Kent Johns last weekend followed by an exhibition match featuring players from the Women’s Premier League and ex-Matilda’s players.
NSW Touch Football also ran a family exhibition game which included boys and girls from 12 years, as well as players up to 50 years from Shire Touch League and Taren Point Touch Association.
''They all loved the new surface and are excited for the potential new touch football competitions later this year," NSW Touch Football competitions coordinator Kim Sloman said.
Fields 2 and 3 at Kareela have been refurbished with a multi-purpose synthetic playing surface which will allow up to 60 hours a week of usage compared with 25 hours a week on turf.
The fields will also be able to be used in all types of weather.
Fields 1 and 4 at Kareela have been refurbished with natural turf.
The synthetic surfaces need to be replaced only every eight to 10 years while turfed surfaces require annual renovations, costing several hundreds of thousands of dollars a year.
The project includes markings for mini-football fields, a synthetic cricket pitch and outfield, capacity for Oztag, lighting and fencing.
