Arnold Schwarzenegger will revisit his breakthrough role by appearing in a new sequel to 1982's Conan the Barbarian, the film's producer has confirmed.
Co-writer and producer Chris Morgan told website The Arnold Fans that Schwarzenegger's character would be "a logical extension of the character established in the '82 film…but 30 years later. When we meet him again, Conan has been many things over the course of his life — a thief, a warrior, a pirate, a king, a legend — and is now an older man." He added: "Think Unforgiven…with a sword-wielding barbarian."
Schwarzenegger, 67, is just weeks away from the premiere of Terminator: Genisys, appearing in another recurrent role in the franchise's fifth outing. Schwarzenegger and his Genisys co-star Jai Courtney will be in Sydney next week for a red-carpet screening on Thursday, ahead of the film's release on July 1.
Bringing back the loin-cloth warrior character of Conan has been mooted by Universal Pictures since 2012, with the intention being to skip over 1984 sequel Conan the Destroyer and a 2011 reboot starring Jason Momoa.
Schwarzenegger told The Arnold Fans it was "the greatest honour to be 67 years old and to still be asked to come back into all those franchises. Whether it is the Terminator movie or it is now Conan, it is fantastic."
Producer Fredrik Malmberg said he aimed to get the production rolling after Schwarzenegger finishes his promotional duties for Terminator: Genisys.
