SUTHERLAND Shire residents were among those taking part in a national day of action against the Commonwealth Bank recently.
The protesters want the bank to publicly rule out financing the Galilee Basin coal mining project as well as the Abbot Point coal port expansion on the Great Barrier Reef.
Spokeswoman Judy Walker said the group had handed out flyers to people and had spoken about their protest to bank staff.
"We are here to show CommBank that their customers and communities right across Australia don't support mega coal mines in the Galilee Basin nor massive coal ports on the Great Barrier Reef," Ms Walker said.
"The one thing that's crazier than sending millions of tonnes of toxic coal on barges through the Great Barrier Reef is believing that customers will stand by you after you've helped to bankroll such a disastrous plan.
"This campaign won't stop until CommBank publicly rules out the projects."
A bank spokesman would not confirm or deny if the bank was providing funds for the Galilee Basin mining project or the Abbot Point port expansion but said it was a signatory to the third edition of the Equator Principles — an internationally recognised set of guidelines that reflects the latest development in environmental, social and governance risk practices.
"We have developed nine ESG [environmental, social and governance] commitments to responsible lending that provide us with a robust framework to asses any project finance and/or business lending activity," he said.
"Those commitments mean we will not lend money to projects that would irrevocably damage World Heritage sites or other high- value conservation areas like the Great Barrier Reef, the Blue Mountains or Kakadu National Park."
