Sutherland Shire Council has not only supported a proposal to expand Loftus Oval by taking an area of bushland from the Royal National Park, it also wants the new football field to have a synthetic surface.
The council resolved to ask the state government to include the extra land with a previous request under which it would gain ownership of ovals at Loftus, Grays Point and Heathcote in return for handing over land in Spring Gully, Bundeena, for addition to the national park.
It said strong consideration should be given to the proposed additional field at Loftus Oval having a synthetic surface of similar quality to fields two and three at Kareela.
The council resolved to ask federal and state MPs ‘‘to support, financially and in kind, the proposed synthetic sports field at Loftus Oval’’.
Results of an on-line Leader poll late on Thursday were 192 respondents (56.64 per cent) in favour of expanding Loftus Oval and 147 (43.36) opposed.
