Alexander, 41, of South Caringbah, has been awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia in the general division for service to sport as a triathlete and to the community.
The three-time Ironman World Champion and two-time Half Ironman World Champion claimed his 10th Australian title earlier this year.
Alexander said the award was as much for his family — wife Neri and children Lucy, Austin and Lani — as it was for him.
"It's not just recognition for me but everyone who contributed," he said.
"My wife and my family have been so supportive throughout my whole career. Then there are mentors, advisers and coaches as well.
"That's why I was able to achieve the consistency to stay in the sport for such a long period of time."
Alexander said he was delighted the receive the honour.
"I think everyone likes a pat on the back for a job well done," he said.
"I know it's a cliche to say but you're certainly not thinking about awards when you're out there.
"But I do appreciate it. It's as much a nod to my family and people around me to allow me to perform at this level.
"You don't do it alone."
Alexander is also an ambassador for the KIDS Foundation and a life member of Cronulla Triathlon Club.
