Superintendent Donohue joined the force as a trainee in 1988 and worked at stations across the eastern suburbs before he was made a detective in 1994.
He worked as a crime manager at Campsie then as the commander of the Mental Health Intervention Team.
Superintendent Donohue was stationed at Sutherland before he took up his current position as St George area commander.
He said he was pleasantly surprised to receive the award.
"I'm very proud. It's just nice to think that your peers think highly enough of you that they would actually nominate you," he said.
"When I started, I just wanted to be a sergeant, so it's fantastic to be where I am."
