Ryan Gosling has penned an open letter to US warehouse store Costco, asking that the company stop stocking caged eggs.
The Crazy, Stupid, Love actor has written to Costco chief executive Craig Jelinek in a letter published by the Humane Society.
He wrote the letter after the Humane Society published footage that showed extreme animal mistreatment by one of the store's major suppliers.
"It is appalling that Costco has been selling these eggs with deceptive labelling on cartons featuring graphics of birds living out in a green pasture," Gosling wrote.
Costco banned the use of caged veal in 2010, and in 2012 the warehouse membership store pressured suppliers to stop using pig gestation crates.
"Don't you feel that chickens also deserve the same mercy?," Gosling asked
"So many corporations are meeting public demand for more humane products and transparency in the food chain. I sincerely hope that Costco will set plans now to go completely cage-free for its eggs."
Gosling, 34, has a history of supporting animal welfare initiatives.
He was one of many Hollywood stars to support a petition against the treatment of egg-laying hens by fast food giant McDonald's in 2011.
In 2013 Gosling wrote an op-ed published in the Globe and Mail about the treatment of farmed pigs in his native Canada, following a successful campaign by the Humane Society to improve conditions.
"I applaud NFACC [the National Farm Animal Care Council] for working to improve life for Canada's pigs, and hope it will close this dangerous loophole by disallowing the pork industry from confining pigs for weeks at a time – something that I would never dream of doing to [my dog] George, and that no compassionate Canadian would ever do to any animal," Gosling wrote at the time.
