The whale season is shaping up to be a busy one with more than 100 mammals spotted over the weekend making their way up the coast.
Whale watching volunteer Wayne Reynolds said 89 were spotted on Tuesday, June 23.
‘‘It is picking up, it is in the peak of the season,’’ he said.
‘‘We’ve had a fair few people showing up and there’s been the usual oohs and aahs.
‘‘They are mainly humpbacks at the moment, we’ve had a fair few minkes which are easy to tell [apart] as minkes are much smaller and look like an over-sized dolphin.
‘‘There’s been false killer whales.
‘‘The last week of June and the first week of July are the times when we will get the big numbers.’’
Mr Reynolds said good viewing spots included Cape Solander, anywhere along the Kurnell headlands and the Coastal Walk in the Royal National Park.
