TWO talented design students made an impressive mark with their school projects recently.
As part of their HSC studies in industrial technology, timber and furnishings, Liam Cooper and Jessica McDonald created pieces that were selected for an exhibition at the Sydney Timber and Working With Wood show.
Exhibit organisers said their designs — a vintage timber dressing table and a chess table — were of such a high standard that they would not look out of place in a furniture shop among hand-crafted creations.
The students spent many out-of-class hours on their projects.
Liam said it was a 12-month process.
"I spent the whole of year 12 on it, researching my inspiration mostly through books," he said.
"It was a subject I really enjoyed. I'm thinking about getting into industrial design teaching myself."
As for the chess board, he hopes to keep it in the family as an heirloom.
Jessica said the after-school hours was worth the final product.
"It was hard work, but great experience," she said. "I wanted to make something I could use, so my design will end up in my bedroom."
Teacher Michael Oste said this year's project were outstanding.
"Often the kids produce amazing work, but for these ones to be selected for a show that is usually for master-crafters is exceptional," he said.
The subject was a popular elective, he said.
"We get a full class every year — 20 or more."
