SYDNEY Airport has begun work on phase two of the T1 improvement program.
The program includes wider pathways and more direct paths to aircraft gates, a new central boulevard, new clear signage and more seating closer to boarding gates.
There will be improved retail and food and beverage options and reorganised duty free shops on the arrivals level.
The works in phase two include the roll-out of automated technology for passport control by Customs, the construction of a straight path through the main duty free store from the screening area to gate lounges, expansion of the inbound immigration hall and duty free store relocation.
Due for completion in the third quarter of 2016, the works have been staged over 20 months to minimise potential disruption.
Sydney Airport managing director Kerrie Mather said the new works would deliver a world-class airport experience for passengers.
"Direct, straight paths, wider walkways, more gate lounge seating, improved terminal ambience, a brand-new shopping and dining offering and improved way-finding will help transform T1 into Australia's premier airport terminal," she said.
