The owners of two dogs attacked in separate incidents at Kingsgrove earlier this month are calling on Rockdale Council to enforce tougher penalties on dangerous canines.
St George police were called to the corner of Kingsgrove Road and The Avenue at 5pm on Tuesday, June 9, to investigate a Maltese shih tzu, being walked on a lead, attacked by a two Staffordshire terriers.
Paramedics treated the injured hands of two people who tried to pull the dogs apart.
Police said that one witness, a St George Animal Rescue employee, knew the dogs which were impounded later and taken to the St George Dog and Catb home.
The same dogs had attacked another small dog earlier in Shaw Street.
Police have passed on their investigation to the council.
A Rockdale Council spokesman said the two dogs remain at the St George Dog and Cat home.
‘‘Council has commenced action as legislated in the Companion Animals Act of 1998. The owners have been issued with notices and declarations as required and must comply within the stated period,’’ he said.
‘‘Council will determine what future the dogs will have once the statutory time frames have passed.’’
The owners of the dogs attacked said animal laws were not strict enough.
