Six people have been evacuated after a unit fire at Penshurst this morning, July 3.
Fire crews were called to the Arcadia Street unit at 5.30am after they received multiple triple-0 calls.
It’s believed an electric blanket caught fire in the bedroom on the ground floor of the two level unit.
There was heat and smoke damage in the bedroom and smoke damage in the rest of the unit.
Two people were evacuated from the unit and four people from neighbouring units.
It’s believed one person has been taken to hospital.
Fire and Rescue NSW assistant director of community safety and research, Chief Superintendent Chris Lewis, said more people were using electric blankets and heaters because of the colder weather.
“Keep looking when cooking and never leave a heater, dryer, electric blanket or any other electrical device unattended,’’ he said.
‘‘Always turn them off when leaving the home or going to bed and remember to check the electrical cords for fraying and other damage before use.”
