Workers are protesting outside a Rockdale construction site today claiming they haven’t been paid more than $400,000.
HD projects director Clyde Daish said he was left $403,000 out of pocket after he wasn’t paid for sub-contract concreting work on the nine-storey building.
He had 10 workers at any one time since August but said the money problems began only in December.
‘‘At the start we were told there was just cash flow payments but then we were told there was no money at all.’’
The loss has had a big impact on his business. He has paid his employees but has had to sell other properties to make up the difference.
He said they weren’t the only other business owners affected with similar stories for plumbers and electricians who had worked on site.
‘‘We just wanted to put on a peaceful protest to put some pressure on them,’’ he said.
His business partner Richard Hazard said they have been left extremely frustrated.
‘‘It’s pretty disappointing. There’s just no remorse and no emotion,’’ he said.
A dozen workers joined in the protest, holding placards and parking their trucks out of the front of their building.
The site is located at 582 Princes Highway in Rockdale and is being built as a mixed use development.
According to Rockdale Council documents the applicant is listed as Dong Yuan Investment Pty Ltd.
The Leader made several attempts to contact the owners for comment.
