THE biggest community sporting event in the region which brings together people from all walks of life will be is on Sunday, July 19.
The 44th annual Wanda Surf Life Saving Club, organisers of the Brooks Payce Sutherland2Surf fun run and walk, brings together families, boys, girls, men and women of all ages over the 11-kilometre course from the starting line at Sutherland to the finish line at Wanda Beach.
Among high-profile entries are Olympic marathon runner Steve Moneghetti and London 2012 Olympian Eloise Wellings of Buraneer
Moneghetti, 52, told the Leader he was thrilled to be in the running.
"I am running in the event for the first time," the former Ballarat school teacher said.
"I am thrilled to be involved in the Sutherland2Surf — it's one of the great community fun runs.
"I look forward to catching up with lots of participants at the 2015 S2S," said Moneghetti.
"It is a race that has been on my bucket list for a number of years and it will be fantastic to be able to share the start line with many of you. Train smart, race hard."
The four-time Olympian competed at the 1988, 1992, 1996 and 2000 Games.
Organisers are hoping for sunny skies and mild weather and they expect 8500 entrants.
"It is great to have such wonderful support from Steve Moneghetti to rally and encourage others," said race co-ordinator Mick Brannock.
"Steve will especially help to inspire entrants and assist at the beginning of the race and it's great that Steve is planning to run.
"It's due to the wonderful support of Southside Runners, a long-term sponsor of the Brooks Payce Sutherland2Surf, that one of Australia's legendary long-distance runners Steve Moneghetti is able to join us"."
For one last easy-paced session before the Sutherland2Surf race on the Sunday, Southside Runners is bringing you an opportunity to join the Olympic champion for a race on Saturday, July 18, at 7am, from Don Lucas Car Park to Greenhills Beach track. There is no need to book — just turn up.
