THE foundation stone for the new Rockdale Library was laid by mayor Shane O'Brien last Saturday.
The library is being replaced — 30 years after the "temporary" building was first opened.
Councillor O'Brien said if everything went according to plan the new library should be opened in mid-2016.
"This is a very exciting moment," councillor O'Brien said.
"This project is testament to my fellow councillors, council staff and the Rockdale Library advisory committee members and their passionate support for this excellent centre of learning in the cultural hub of Rockdale."
He previously said the new library represented a major milestone for the town centre.
"The building will change the city's skyline and complement our historic town hall," he said.
"The new state-of-the-art, purpose- built library will provide the community with facilities and services that meet 21st century living."
The new library will include a new customer service centre, meeting rooms, open plan library floor area with an information zone, returns room, children's library and a cafe on the ground floor.
While the new library is being built, other branch libraries will open for longer hours.
During construction, items from the old library will be kept at Bexley Community Centre.
