A brilliant sunrise greeted this morning’s dawn patrollers, it’s a pity yesterday’s wave size didn’t co-operate as well!
Cronulla has had another good week of waves after Saturday's big blow when the winds swung around on Monday and it’s been happy days since then.
Yesterday was the pick and that’s where today’s report pics come from, with Swellnet getting it spot on with its 2-foot prediction this morning. Hopefully they don’t get it right again because they say its going to be this big for the rest of the week albeit with offshore winds.
It might be time to crack out the Fish or the Longboard (maybe not) because I think the banks are going to really line up nicely with a week of small swell and offshore winds UNLESS the beach straightens out and we lose the great banks we have now.
Today is also another first for the Surf Report with a WSL contest free zone. There has been so much ink and pixels wasted on the Fanning shark incident at Jbay that I refuse to enter the argument….even though I am pissed that I didn’t get 10,000 points because I picked him in the surfpicks. I would have been three contest wins straight!
Today's pics were shot at the Alley yesterday when the time and tide all aligned and every good surfer on the beach knew where to go. This did leave Wanda almost surferless so the smart surfer could have had good waves to themselves!
Hayden Blair, Andrew Lester, Strohy, Daintree etc all must work night shift because there were no spare waves coming through.
The NRMA NSW Schools Titles wrapped up last week with four new champions being crowned after a series of hotly contested finals in picturesque two-to-three foot waves at Rainbow Beach, Bonny Hills. Local surfers fared pretty badly with Paris being the only one to make a final, Paris also reached the semi finals of the NSW Junior State Titles.-Alysse Cooper (Queenscliff – Macellar Girls) put on a dynamic performance in the Senior Women, posting a handful of respectable scores. The Northern Beaches goofy-footer overcame an in-form field of Danielle Hancock (Swansea High School), Paris Whittaker (Distance Education) and Rubie Reents (Ulladulla High School) – who claimed second, third and fourth respectively - with a heat total of 14.67.
Maybe we can do better this weekend when over 120 kids from all corners of NSW will venture to Maroubra when the NRMA NSW Grommet Titles kicks off from Friday, 24th July – Sunday, 26th July, 2015.
Competitors in the Under-12 and Under-14 divisions will be vying for a revered NSW Junior Title, with the Under-14 division given an allocated amount of positions for the Australian Junior Surfing Titles, which will take place on North Stradbroke Island in December.
Finally the Big Wave Tour (BWT) has placed the Billabong Pico Alto in Peru on Yellow Alert with a projected 20 - 30’ -plus swell heading towards the region with the expected arrival on Tuesday, July 21, 2015. Event organizers are closely monitoring a system that is travelling towards the area and the WSL will issue a Green Alert 72 hours prior to commencement if the event is called on.
"After watching a somewhat dormant South Pacific for the last few weeks, things have come alive again," said Big Wave Tour VP, Gary Linden. "A strong swell is heading for Pico Alto, Peru and the timing could not be better for the event with the swell peaking mid-day on the low tide. These conditions should produce the best possible waves for a tremendous Final."
The Billabong Pico Alto was the only Southern Hemisphere event last season to experience the required wave size, taking place on Thursday, July 3, 2014 in 40-foot waves where reigning WSL BWT Champion Makuakai Rothman (HAW) claimed his maiden victory.
There is NOT one Australian in the top ten for this year!
Top 10 finishers on the 2014/2015 BWT:
Makuakai Rothman (HAW),Gabriel Villaran (PER),Nic Lamb (USA),Shawn Dollar (USA),Anthony Tashnick (USA),Greg Long (USA),Nathan Fletcher (USA),Grant Baker (ZAF),Natxo Gonzalez (EUK),Patrick Gudauskas (USA)………Josh Kerr is a wildcard for this event so that is one positive .
Enough of that , take some extra foam to the beach tomorrow because you may need it. If you want to borrow a Mal, I have one at home that I had made for when the Cronulla Sharks win the NRL- I don’t think it's going to get wet this year!
