MPs back the Leader
The Leader is a very important institution in our community. For decades, it has been the most important media outlet in this part of Sydney.
The Leader is a highly respected voice in the St George region. In print and online form, it consistently captures the issues that matter to our area.
The strength of the Leader enables it to conduct the necessary research into local stories, giving the publication a clear and independent editorial voice.
The Leader is a professional operation with the expertise and resources to form an independent view on the key issues in our community.
Its photography team captures images that become part of our local history.
Before I entered Parliament I worked in media and I know that the industry is changing. But I also know that independent, substantive news will never go out of fashion, and that is what the Leader provides to the St George community.
I would ask Fairfax Media to take into account the importance of the publication to our region before going ahead with any changes.
The staff and readers of the Leader deserve nothing less.
David Coleman MP, federal member for Banks
I have lived my whole life in St George and for as long as I can remember the Leader has reported on issues that matter to residents.
That is why I am so disappointed to learn that Fairfax Media will be cutting back publication to only one day a week and that this will result in job losses.
I appreciate the changing nature of media and that more than ever we seek out news from online sources but local papers, such as the Leader, play an important role in reporting on local issues and connecting neighbours.
After all, not everyone is online and some of us still enjoy the look and feel of a real newspaper.
I urge John Angilley, director of Australian Community Media at Fairfax Media, to reconsider these changes so the Leader can continue to report on what matters to people in St George.
Mark Coure MP, member for Oatley
I'm disappointed that Fairfax Media, owner of the Leader, will move to a once-a-week edition.
I hope no staff are affected as newspapers adjust to the digital era. There is still space for local community newspapers
Loonce Yu, Leader Facebook
The Leader has supported local sports for years. Show support for our paper.
Elly Graf, Leader Facebook
Dismantling the editorial team will have an adverse impact on our communities.
