The long-awaited Greenhills skate park could be open by Christmas.
Sutherland Shire mayor Kent Johns said today, July 23, that work was well under way at Greenhills Parklands and the owners had commissioned Convic, a leading skate park design and construction company for the project.
He said the design was a collaboration between the company, developers, the council, local skaters and residents.
“No doubt the skating community is eagerly watching the progress which can be clearly seen from Captain Cook Drive,’’ he said.
‘‘When complete, the skate park will be another quality recreational facility in the shire and will have a range of skateboarding and recreational experiences for all age groups.
The skate park, off Captain Cook Drive, is one part of a 91-hectare sport and recreation precinct being developed by landowners Australand and Breen Holdings under a voluntary planning agreement with the council.
There will be playing fields, a skate park and other recreational facilities valued at $25 million.
The design has a 1600-square-metre area devoted to skateboarders and separated into distinct active zones; a bowl area featuring a large vertical transition; street zones with medium-to-large stair sets and a snake run/flow area that reflects the early days of skateboarding.
The council did road works last year to prepare for construction of the Greenhills Parklands sport and recreation precinct and installed a new roundabout at Lindum Road, bus stops, pedestrian refuge islands and footpaths.
Despite the recent weather which set back the production schedule, the preparation for the stage one playing field and the hockey fields is progressing.
Are you pleased work on the skate park is well underway?
