JACK "The Hammer" Brubaker gave up his full-time job as a plumber to pursue his dream of becoming a world boxing champion.
The 23-year-old fighter from Cronulla is the main preliminary bout before the Danny Green cruiserweight fight against Tommy Kovacs at Hisense Arena, Melbourne Park, on Wednesday, August 19.
Brubaker is fighting reigning WBC Youth World Welterweight under-24 champion Chinese pugilist Yang Xing Xin.
The bout doubles as an Oriental Pacific Boxing Federation title clash.
Brubaker is 180 centimetres tall and his welterweight bout is in the 66.68-kilogram weight division.
Brubaker's coach David Birchell of Caringbah, trains the young fighter at Dick Caine's Gym at Carss Park.
Brubaker said it was a great chance to raise his profile.
He has had 10 professional bouts, for eight wins, one loss and one draw.
"I want to win a world title one day and fighting on the Danny Green card is a great opportunity for me," Brubaker said.
Birchell, who has the knack of getting the best out of his boxers, said Brubaker had the right attitude to succeed.
"Jack is a good young kid, with a good technique and he is a quite a powerful puncher," Birchell said.
"He's learning to use his height and reach in fights now. 'Yang Xing Xin is a tough fighter, he is the current champion and he has only been stopped once in a fight — with a cut eye."
