Emergency services were called to a Lacey Street house at 9.35pm after a man, 46, was stabbed in the chest.
Officers cannot talk to him because he is having surgery in St George Hospital.
Police said there was an argument between the victim and a man known to him. It was believed earlier that the man police are searching for was the brother of the stabbed man. Police were unable to confirm this at the press conference.
Inspector Leonard James from St George police said officers were still looking for the offender.
‘‘We have been in contact with his family and all his known associates,’’ he said.
‘‘We have been unable to locate him at this stage.
‘‘We believe he is in a 1995 silver VS Holden sedan with registration number UGU 258.
‘‘We ask anyone in the community that sees the car to not approach the man but to contact us at Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.’’
Inspector Leonard is urging the offender to turn himself in.
‘‘I would ask him to surrender himself to Kogarah police station regardless of what has happened because it’s the best action for him to do,’’ he said.
