Lone Pine remembered: Students from St Patrick’s Primary School at Sutherland have made 2277 crosses in remembrance, one for each Australian casualty at the battle of Lone Pine, Gallipoli, fought 100 years ago today, Thursday, August 6.
The crosses carry a message from the students — ‘‘We will remember them, Lest We Forget’’ — for Australian soldiers killed or wounded at Lone Pine.
The crosses will feature at the official opening today of the Woronora Military Memorial by NSW Governor David Hurley.
The memorial honours the fallen heroes of Sutherland Shire including the three Victoria Cross recipients who now rest at Woronora Memorial Park.
After the memorial’s official opening, the crosses will be transported to the Australian War Memorial, Canberra, which will send them to military cemeteries throughout the world.
Everyone is invited to the memorial’s opening ceremony which will begin at 4.30pm inside the main entrance of the park, 121 Linden Street, Sutherland.
The ceremony will end at 5.30pm with a symbolic blowing of the whistles representing the start of the Lone Pine battle when Australian troops left their trenches.
