THE Como-Jannali Junior Rugby League Club community has reacted angrily to news that it must fork out $455,000 of the estimated $1.2 million cost of a replacement amenities building and clubhouse at Scylla Oval.
The Leader reported on August 11 that Sutherland Shire Council’s infrastructure projects and works committee voted on August 3 not to accept a recommendation from staff to approve an internal loan so work could start as soon as possible, but instead insist that the club provides $455,000.
The matter was on the agenda for the August 10 full council meeting, but no councillors called the item for debate — allowing the committee recommendation to stand.
It was yet another kick in the teeth for club officials and members, who had in the past raised allegations of sewage contamination within the amenities building and clubhouse, and the field itself.
A building report by a club member backed up claims that sewage comes up through the toilets inside the building during heavy rains.
The building and oval itself also have a history of flooding.
The council pledged earlier this year to bring forward plans for a replacement building and clubhouse, and to investigate funding models so that work can start as soon as possible.
A sticking point has always been who should pay, with the council arguing the club should finance the cost of the clubhouse component.
Dozens of members of the club and wider community made comments on the Leader website in recent days, with all but a few critical of the council. Click here to see related story and comments.
