THERE is a new name for a new season, and the rich cricket tradition from the past will be carried towards its anticipated bold future.
Junior and senior cricket will now come under the banner of "St George District Cricket Association" (SDCA), when the first ball of the 2015-16 season is bowled on Saturday, September 5, at grounds throughout the region.
When the merger occurred of Georges River Penshurst and St George associations in 1993 the title had combined both their names.
SDCA patron Kevin Greene said now the association reverts to the commonly used district title.
"The association has been the nursery for many fine cricketers who have played for St George, NSW and Australia," Greene told the Leader.
SDCA president Danny Williams said the new name was easier for everyone to understand.
More than 1500 registered players were on the books in both junior and senior age competitions.
"All junior cricketers hope to one day wear the green and gold, but they're also proud to wear the red and white of St George; now our title reflects what everyone has always known," Williams said.
"With the new season the association is promoting the wide variety of formats available to boys and girls who want to play Australia's favourite sport, from the Milo In2 Cricket, for 5 to 8-year-olds; the T20 Blast programs on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings for new participants; and of course traditional formats for older players.
"Cricket is a game for all Australians, with a chance to learn some skills and have time with friends," he said.
