IT WAS a special day for Angus, the six-year-old beagle with lymphoma, last Sunday.
He was one of 45 dogs and their owners who took part in the first PAWS4k run at Greenhills Beach.
The four-kilometre race was held to support a new charity PAWS4Cancer, which aims to raise funds for research into the care, cure and prevention of canine and feline cancer.
Angus won the on the day.
But because he belongs to the event organiser David Coulter, Angus forfeited the sponsored prize of a grooming package at the Dog Wash Cafe, Caringbah.
The prize was passed on to the next winners, Josh Clarke and his dog Rocky.
Funds raised on the day will go to Sydney University veterinary science faculty for research.
Mr Coulter, who organised the run with friends Andrew Withers and Mariano Diaz, said the the event was staged at short notice to accommodate Angus.
"The reason we rushed it through was that Angus came out of remission," he said. "He won't be here next year unless a miracle happens."
