PLANS have been released for the new-look Gunnamatta Pavilion following its proposed refurbishment.
Last month, the Leader revealed that Sutherland Shire Council had given in-principle support for The Clubhouse at Rosebery as the preferred operator of the Gunnamatta Cafe and Pavilion after calling for expressions of interest in 2014 for an operator to refurbish and lease the building.
The Clubhouse currently operates a restaurant on the ground floor of Surf Life Saving Australia headquarters at 789 Botany Road, Rosebery.
A comprehensive public consultation process on the proposal has now started.
Because it is located on Crown Reserve, any lease over the pavilion will require the consent of the Trade and Investment Minister.
If approved, the whole of Gunnamatta Pavilion will be refurbished externally and the parts of the building to be occupied under lease by The Clubhouse will be refurbished at no cost to the council.
Ownership of the building will be retained by the council.
Permanent occupants of the pavilion will continue to use the building including the Cronulla Youth Weight Training Association, Cronulla Triathlon Club, the Canoe Club, Water Polo Club and RSL Swim Club. Individuals and community groups will still be able to hire sections of the pavilion.
Sutherland Shire mayor Kent Johns said the proposal has the potential to reactivate and breathe new life into the entire Gunnamatta Pavilion and create a vibrant community precinct at the same time.
"This is an iconic building in the shire with considerable heritage and cultural significance to the community so we are mindful that we need to take a considered approach," he said.
The council has asked the Clubhouse to prepare a development application based on its proposed floor plan.
