A RECORD number of runners and walkers is expected to take part in the Beachside Dash on Sunday, September 13.
The Dash is held over three distances along the Botany Bay foreshore from Dolls Point to Kyeemagh.
All money raised goes to the St George and Sutherland Medical Research Foundation.
The foundation was established in 2007 to support the work of medical researchers at St George and Sutherland hospitals.
In 2014, the foundation established a capacity-building grant to increase the quantity and quality of internationally competitive research at the hospitals.
Director of infectious diseases, immunlogy and sexual health at St George Hospital, Professor Steven Krillis, was the recipient of that grant.
The money was for funding research into new treatments for heart disease.
It will also enable world leader in inflammation research, Professor Richard Stevens from Harvard Medical School, to work at St George Hospital on the project.
Professor Krillis is taking part in the Dash with his grandchildren.
"The Dash is an opportunity to meet the members of the local community who support the hospital and its research," he said.
"It promotes a healthier lifestyle in this day and age where obesity is becoming a major health issue.
"It's a wonderful day for all the family to get together and support vital medical research."
The St George Bank 10-kilometre Dash starts at 7.30am; the Tynan Motor Group five-kilometre Dash starts at 9am.
The Novotel Sydney Brighton Beach two-kilometre Dash will start at 10.10am, and all children under 12 will receive a finisher's medal.
The 10-kilometre and five-kilometre course has been changed to allow runners to remain on the footpath for the entire race.
A health and wellbeing festival will be held on the day at Peter Depena Reserve.
There will also be children's activities and entertainment.
