A Riverwood man, 40, will face court today after assaulting a taxi driver and police overnight.
The man hailed a taxi in Regents Park at 10pm but when the taxi arrived in Washington Avenue at Riverwood he tried to leave without paying.
Police said he punched the taxi driver in the face after an argument over the fare.
He then got out and opened the driver’s door, taking the driver’s wallet and car keys while continuing to assault him.
The driver followed the passenger to a nearby house and a further confrontation took place.
Campsie police arrived and separated the men.
While the officers searched the passenger they found the car key in his pocket and he was arrested.
Police said the man bit one of the officers on the hand and refused to let go.
The second officer attempted to force the man to release his colleague’s hand by striking him.
Eventually the man was taken to Campsie police station where he was charged with aggravated robbery and assaulting police.
He was refused bail to appear in Burwood Court today.
The two officers were treated for hand injuries at Canterbury Hospital.
