Miranda police tried a different tactic to combat the distribution of illegal drugs - a free snag.
Police put on the free BBQ at the Mator Court unit block on Kiora Road at Miranda on Wednesday to speak to residents about concerns they had about about illegal drugs, including Ice, in the area.
Miranda Commander Superintendent Michael O’Toole said it might be an unusual tactic but it had proven results.
‘‘It gives people the chance to mingle with police and talk to officers in a non-confrontational way,’’ he said.
‘‘We’ve had intelligence that suggests that illegal drugs are being used and distributed from this area.
‘‘By meeting with residents we can respond and reassure the community that we are taking action.
‘‘You can see by the amount of people that have come out that it works.
‘‘This is just one of several strategies that we use and we will continue to target the area.’’
Greg Staunton has lived at Mator Court for the last 14 years and said it was great to have a free snag and soft drink.
‘‘I haven’t seen this kind of thing before but I don’t have to cook lunch today,’’ he said.
‘‘Usually you don’t see police around here unless someone's in trouble.’’
The public housing block is full of interesting characters.
Some residents have lived there for years while others are starting a new life after being released from jail.
Miranda police urge anyone with information about the distribution of drugs in the area to contact them on 9541 3899.
Do you think it's a good idea for police to interact more with the community?
