CRONULLA Sailing Club, founded in 1965, is celebrating its 50th anniversary with 350 members.
The 2015-16 season started on Saturday, September 12, with many sailors enjoying a spectacular day on the water. The club is located adjacent to Gunamatta Park, Cronulla.
Cronulla Sailing Club sailing class captain Marty Janes said the club runs sailing in two divisions; dinghy (estuary racing) and offshore racing.
He said people of all ages are encouraged to join and participate with the club catering for all levels of experience with learn-to-sail programs through to competitive club racing.
"The journey through the club for any individual may start from very young age as a child, my son started when he was eight, although, we have had younger members," club class captain Marty Janes said.
Janes said children start the learn to sail with the stage one dinghy introduction course and then progress to stage two course is where sailors consolidate their skills.
"These courses are a great way for children to be introduced into sailing," Janes said.
"We have now introduced racing in the bay for the first time this season.
"The kids in racing in the bay typically will race in Optimist dinghies or the open BICs, with the BICs being a new class to the club.
"Racing in the bay is held fortnightly."
Janes said children then progress to dinghy racing in the estuary between Bass and Flinders point, Jibbon and Mainbar.
Classes of boats racing include Flying Elevens, 29ers, Lasers, Laser II which then are moving into NS 14 and MG 14s.
The stage one and stage two learn-to-sail programs start on Sunday, October 18, stage one classes are from 9am until 10.30am and stage two from 11am until 12.30pm. Details: cronullasc.com.

This was incorrect, in fact Smith played with the Illawong Menai Cricket Club from the under-8s age group in the Sutherland Junior Cricket Association.
