Construction has halted on the Rockdale City Aquatic Centre after asbestos was found at the site.
Rockdale Council confirmed bonded asbestos had been found during building works.
A spokesman said they were working with builder FDC Construction and Fitout on a remediation plan to ensure that work on the pool continues safely.
Nearby residents received a letter from FDC notifying them of them issue.
‘‘During earthwork operations small amounts of asbestos fragments have been discovered in the north eastern end of the site,’’ the letter read.
‘‘This material has been assessed as bonded asbestos by a qualified contaminated land consultant, with specialist experience in this area. ‘‘FDC are proceeding to remediate the soils in question under a strict protocol established by a site remediation action plan.’’
That plan includes dust control measures as well as independent air monitoring.
A Rockdale Council spokesman said construction would stop for a few weeks at least while the asbestos is removed.
