INDEPENDENT Christian charity HammondCare says its new retirement village at Miranda will boost accommodation options for older people in Sutherland Shire.
Stage one of HammondGrove Miranda opened on Friday and includes 38 apartments with access to a communal terrace and village green.
Construction of a second stage has begun and will add 38 apartments, four penthouses, 10 villas and a Men's Shed.
There will also be a pool, gym, hair and beauty salon and library.
Retired businessman John Picken, 77, of Caringbah, and his wife Claire are moving into the retirement village on October 12.
"We appreciate that as we get much older it will be harder to move so we decided to move while we could," Mr Picken said. "We're looking at it with positivity and as an opportunity to have more time to ourselves, discharge some personal projects and enhance our lifestyle."
HammondCare is building the retirement village next to its 92-bed aged-care home.
HammondCare Miranda opened in January 2013 and is the only aged care centre of its type in the shire for people with dementia.
