Back to reality for Shire surfers today as the predicted southerly blew through just as I left the house this morning.
There wasn’t a surfer to be seen anywhere this morning just the usual desperados going for a swim at Northies and Cronulla out of the wind.
There can’t be any local surfers complaining today though, the last 4 days have been straight out of the excellent box with 3-5 ft south swell and north-west winds, every day a little different. I took these pics yesterday morning when I thought the run had ended, I was obviously wrong and had to go home and change boards.
The banks on the beach are also as good as they get, all the way from Northies to the bend, I reckon 8 good banks - take your pick. I shot these pics at Wanda way just near Fwits, about 10 guys out on 3 banks.
The Northern reefs were also good all weekend so that was more love to spread around.
The future doesn’t look as good as the past with Swellnet showing a new south swell today of 3-5ft tapering into another longer-range south swell with sets in the 3ft+ range. Surf early because the north-west window won’t be big.
If you use Swellnet it pays to read the forecaster notes and not just look at the charts, you might learn something and it's a lot more accurate.
In close to local news, the 2016 Australasian World Surf League (WSL) Qualifying Series (‘QS) will get off to a flying start early next year with the Carve Pro being upgraded to a QS1000 event.
The elite three-day competition – which will form the first of four stops on the recently announced NSW Pro Surf Series – will take place at Maroubra Beach from 15–17 January, 2016.
Unlike the current surfing conditions in Bali, small surf in the one-to-two foot range and onshore winds have prompted event organizers to call a lay day for the Quiksilver and Roxy Pro France, but solid surf projected over the coming days will soon see the world's best battle it out in the world-class beach breaks of Southern France.
"Small surf and onshore winds this morning and we've called competition off for the day," said WSL Commissioner, Kieren Perrow. "We have a lot of surf coming so we'll be keeping a close eye on conditions over the next few days and ensure we take advantage of the best surf available".
Still in Europe, Kolohe Andino (USA), 21, has won the Allianz Billabong Pro Cascais over Caio Ibelli (BRA), 21, in four-to-five foot surf at the backup venue of Praia do Guincho.
Andino came firing right out of the gates in the final with a solid display of power surfing on his backhand for a 7.67 and the heat lead in the first instants of the 35-minute bout. A quick exchange on successive right-handers gave both surfers limited opportunities, but Andino with an average score increased his lead over the Brazilian.
The cream is rising to the top as it gets down to the season end on the WS - Connor O'Leary got some good points and sits just behind Stuart Kennedy on 19th. He has to make a semi or quarter at least to kick on-can he do it!.
