GLENN Wheeler was the first person to wish me a merry Christmas this year. He was a couple of months early and wearing a pair of Speedos but I was more than happy just to see him, let alone dwell on such a greeting.
He talked a lot too. That doesn't come as a surprise to anyone who has met him. And he left me with this gem out of left field: "Anyone who picks up their Leader and doesn't open it are idiots!"
Glenn had his accident on the very day we buried one of his fellow De La Salle school mates, Dave Crawford, who was also riding a motorbike when fate intervened.
Both sons of the shire had their accidents on the road and now both the families have long roads ahead..
Glenn's wife Michelle, their children and the shire community are blessed to still have their husband, father and ambassador still with us. But each minute they are under no illusions of the hard work and patience needed as he continues his recovery — increasingly now at home, which is good news.
Glenn was one of the first people you would ask for help, and for someone who gave so much to our community. It's time to give some back.
GLENN’S LUNCH
A lunch will be held later this month to help raise money for injured TV and radio personality Glenn Wheeler.
Mr Wheeler, of Caringbah, was riding a scooter when he was hit by a vehicle at the intersection of Woolooware Road and Caronia Avenue, Woolooware, in January.
He has spent the past several months recovering in a brain rehab unit.
Colleagues at 2GB have organised a lunch on October 28 at Doltone House, Darling Island Wharf at Pyrmont to raise money for ongoing healthcare.
Tickets are $99 and available at 2gbshop.com.
The lunch comes after thousands of dollars were raised during a media industry fundraiser in Sydney last month. His colleagues from Channel Seven and 2GB were joined by faces from the ABC, News Corp, Fairfax, 2UE, Nine and Ten at the event at The Star.
