Teams from NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service and Fire and Rescue NSW carried out a hazard reduction burn off in the Georges River National Park on Friday.
It is between Moons Avenue, Cedar Street and the Georges River at Lugarno.
There will be no public access to the area.
The six hectare burn off is expected to result in some smoke which may affect Lugarno residents.
NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service regional manager Gary Dunnett said it will start today with mop-up operations continuing over the weekend.
‘‘These hazard reduction burns are part of an on-going program to reduce the fuel levels and risk of fire to properties from potential wildfires across the Sydney metropolitan region,” he said.
‘‘Residents from adjoining residential areas may experience periods of smoke, haze or ash fall from Friday through until mop-up operations are completed over the weekend.
‘‘NPWS advise that community members in these smoke affected areas who have asthma, or who are susceptible to respiratory problems, should take the necessary precautions during burning operations.
‘‘We also remind motorists that smoke may affect roads in the vicinity of these two burns, so please drive to the conditions, adhere to local signage and any direction given by our onsite fire crews.”
