THE importance of the nuclear medicine industry to Sutherland Shire will be the subject of a free talk hosted by Shire Futures' Project Inc. next month.
This is the first in a series of discussions planned by the Shire Futures' Project Inc, a non-profit group examining ways to address opportunities for existing and potential new businesses in the shire.
With the completion of the new $168 million nuclear medicine production plant at ANSTO at Lucas Heights, Australia is set to become one of the world's leading suppliers of cancer diagnosis drug technetium-99m.
Shire Futures' Project Inc chairman Malcolm Kerr said the local and international community would benefit through the skills and expertise of the world-class scientists at ANSTO.
"These skills and expertise should be harnessed in order to build a strong community awareness in the advancement of nuclear medicine," he said.
"The key challenges include the need to consolidate nuclear medicine industry as a safe and viable industry within the shire, thereby keeping and attracting top talents from all over the world.
"The shire is in a good position to encourage further debate in the nuclear medicine area."
Leading industry, academic and government experts will speak at the Nuclear Medicine Technology Advances and Benefits in Nuclear Medicine talk on Friday, November 6, 9am-noon, Hazelhurst Regional Gallery & Arts Centre, Gymea.
