Skateboard riders gave the facility a good workout on the weekend after it was opened before landscaping was completed and the site officially handed over to Sutherland Shire Council.
The skate park, which was originally scheduled to open in November 2013, is part of the first stage of a 91 hectare sporting and recreation ‘‘mecca’’on former sand-mining sites.
Two adjoining synthetic hockey fields are also part of the first stage.
Frasers Property (formerly Australand) and Breen Holdings are developing the sporting facilities under a voluntary planning agreement with the council that allowed the companies to develop the Greenhills Beach housing estate.
Interim opening hours for the skate park are 7am to sunset.
Entry is via the roundabout on Lindum Road and a public car park for the facility.
There is a bus stop on Captain Cook Drive near the skate park.
Design and construction company Convic built the facility, which has a skating area of about 1600 square metres.
A council statement said it was separated into distinct active zones with a bowl area featuring a large vertical transition, street zones with medium to large stair sets, and a snake run/flow area which ‘‘pays homage to the early days of skateboarding’’.
The isolated location of the facility has drawn criticism since it was first announced.
An earlier push for a skate park at Wanda was rejected by the council.
