Staff and students have paid tribute to their school principal who died of cancer this month.
Heathcote High School principal Mark Noonan, 59, who was a passionate advocate for public education, lost his long battle with the illness on November 5.
Mr Noonan started as a mathematics teacher, and also taught at Georges River College Penshurst and Jannali and Woolooware high schools before he became principal of Heathcote High School in 2013.
He was also a keen sportsman.
Heathcote High School's relieving principal Catherine Pearse said Mr Noonan had a long and rewarding career.
"He saw his role as principal of Heathcote High School as the crowning glory," she said.
"He often spoke of his affection for and pride in the students and staff and how much he enjoyed being part of our community.
"He is also remembered as a caring and patient man who helped many troubled students through difficult times.
"Mark will be sorely missed.
"Our thoughts go out to his family at this very sad time."
Staff and students have expressed their condolences.
The school''s youngest staff member, Chenay Mercer, said she was grateful for the guidance and insight Mr Noonan provided.
Former students posted comments on the school's Facebook page.
Lee Brack said: "He had great plans for Heathcote High School."
Jan Ware said: "A great educator and colleague."
Gail Hart said: "Many lucky students were guided and nurtured by Mark."
