NOT all players are lucky enough to get a second chance, which is why Blake Powell isn't going to let his slip.
The former Sutherland Sharks striker spent four years at Sydney FC before he was released last year following a knee operation.
Powell, 24, returned to the National Premier Leagues NSW competition and scored 21 goals in 16 appearances for APIA Leichhardt this season.
Powell's irresistible form saw Ernie Merrick take him on trial with Wellington Phoenix. Powell then signed a one-year A-League contract with the New Zealand-based club.
Powell returns to face the Sky Blues for the first time at Allianz Stadium tonight and agreed he was a good example for young players to follow.
"It was a bit tough obviously [being released by Sydney FC] but it made me a stronger person, I think," he said.
"It made me harder and I know I'm not going to take this opportunity for granted.
"I'm going to work very hard to stay here.
"I still had the dream of getting back to the top level of Australian football.
"I didn't want to let that go.
"I was going up to the field and doing extra sessions by myself.
"It sounds obvious but it's true, hard work really does pay off."
Powell said he had seen vast improvement in his own game since returning to the professional environment under Merrick.
"I was so excited [when I got the call from Merrick]," he said.
"I tried to work really hard last season for APIA and score lots of goals to get noticed.
"Ernie called me and asked if I wanted a trial and eventually asked if I wanted a contract.
"I was so grateful for the opportunity. I just want to do my best now to repay him."
The Wellington squad stayed in Sydney after their loss to Western Sydney last weekend, allowing Powell to catch up with family and friends in the shire.
Having overcome the hamstring complaint that kept him out of the defeat to the Wanderers, Powell said he was ready to return.
"A goal would be nice," he said.
"It was a disappointing game against Wanderers.
"It's a long trip over here and we don't want to go home empty handed.
"It's still early in the season and I guess there's still room for improvement."
Kick-off tonight at Allianz Stadium is 8pm.
