5SKATEBOARDERS at the new Greenhills skateboard park will be able to stay cool and sunburn-free this summer thanks to a new initiative by Sutherland Shire Council.
Project Youth workers will be at the skatepark to provide free water between 11am and 3pm every Saturday and Sunday during summer.
The project coincides with Transdev adding the Greenhills skatepark to its daily Cronulla to Kurnell 987 bus service.
The bus will leave at the stop opposite Cronulla Station and is timed to coincide with train arrivals.
It will stop at the new bus stops at the Lindum Road roundabout which provide access to and from the skatepark.
Sutherland Shire Council community and lifestyles committee chair Councillor Tracy Cook said after speaking the youth at the Greenhills Skatepark on a recent visit she decided to initiate the 'youth water program'.
"Skating is attracting up to 500 young adults to this new facility from all parts of the shire and beyond," Cr Cook said.
Bottled water is being donated by Taren Point beverage manufacturers Matthew and Darren Shelley of Berts Soft Drinks.
"Project youth workers have been engaged not just as water providers, but also as youth mentors to interact with skaters and provide a networking resource to the diverse array of youth services within the shire including Police Youth Club, YMCA and Shirelive.' Cr Cook said.
Interim opening hours for the skatepark are 7.30am to sunset. Entry is via the roundabout on Lindum Road and the car park for the facility, and not via the construction site. For timetable and bus stop information for the 987 bus service from Cronulla Station to Kurnell, visit: transdevnsw.com.au.
