The award winning and St George-based Australian Macedonian Theatre of Sydney will present their inaugural Aleksandar the Great Theatre Awards and a premiere performance of Chento on Saturday November 28 at Hurstville Civic Theatre.
This closing event of Hurstville Discovery Festival of Community Arts will be attended by the Macedonian Ambassador in Australia, Vele Trpevski.
The theatre’s playwright and co-founder, Dushan Ristevski, said that the monodrama, Chento honoured the controversial ideologist, Metodija Andonov — also known as, Chento — who fought for an independent and democratic Macedonia.
Stefo Nantsou is directing the play.
During World War II he formed a Macedonian provisional government and fought against German and Bulgarian fascists.
After the war he became the first president of the Republic of Macedonia within the Yugoslav Federation.
But the Communist Party in Tito’s Yugoslavia removed him and charged him with treason for cooperating with America and its allies for which he received a nine year sentence.
After his release he died in poverty of cancer in 1957.
Ristevski’s play is performed by Vasko Srbinovski and directed by Stefo Nantsou.
