Cronulla’s Matt Jones has fired a three under par 68 to take the clubhouse lead during the second round of the Australian Open.
Jones finished at seven under through 36 holes, with a two shot lead over Wollongong’s Lincoln Tighe, who will tee off in his second round at 12.50pm.
The 35-year-old had five birdies on Friday morning as he took advantage of the cooler, calmer conditions at The Australian Golf Club, Rosebery, than those faced on Thursday.
Players endured 40 degree temperatures and strong, blustery winds on the opening day of the tournament’s 100th edition.
Kareela’s Aron Price is also in a strong position in a tie for fourth at three under.
Matt’s older brother Brett, making his Australian Open debut, finished the first round even and will tee off in his second round at 1pm.
Cronulla’s Scott Arnold had a disappointing nine over 80 in the first round and will begin his second round at 1.15pm.
2013 Masters champion Adam Scott is two over after two rounds, while defending champion Jordan Spieth (even) will play his second round this afternoon.
