The NSW Breakers dreams of an 11th straight Women’s National Cricket League title were dashed when they were stung by the South Australia Scorpions which defeated them by 54 runs in the 2015-16 season final on Sunday at Hurstville Oval.
It is the first time South Australia have won the WNCL ending NSW’s decade long domination.
It was also the first time Hurstville Oval hosted a WNCL final.
A century from England’s wicket-keeper and batter Sarah Taylor (110) piloted the Scorpions to 7-264 from their 50 overs after winning the toss and batting.
Batting number three, Taylor, struck her second century of the season against NSW belting 14 fours from 106 balls.
NSW were out for 210 in the 46th over with Naomi Stalenberg topscoring with 58 and St George-Sutherland Women’s Cricket Club’s Nicola Carey making a fighting 32 before she was bowled.
The pair put on a fifth wicket, 51-run partnership to chase down South Australia’s total.
Carey tried hard with the ball taking 0-11 from her three overs.
Riverwood’s Rene Farrell took 1-42 for six overs NSW and was out for four when she batted.
Farrell broke through in the fourth over when she had Tegan McPharlin caught for five in the slips.
Carey and Farrell now turn their immediate attention to the Sydney Thunder in the inaugural Women’s Big Bash League.
The pair debut for Sydney Thunder against Sydney Sixers on Sunday at Howell Oval, Penrith, at 2.30pm.
