MATT Jones grew up idolising the golfers whose names are engraved on the Stonehaven Cup.
Now it is the Oyster Bay golfer's turn to see his name alongside some of the greats of the game after he won the 100th Australian Open on Sunday. Jones held his nerve to win the open by a shot from world No.1 Jordan Spieth and 2013 Masters champion Adam Scott.
An emotional Jones thanked his parents and Oatley-based coach Gary Barter in front of a packed gallery at his home course, The Australian Golf Club, after he emulated Greg Norman by winning an Open.
"It's amazing," Jones said. "It's something I would have thought about from when I was six when I first met him [Norman].
"To have my name on this trophy with (Jack) Nicklaus, (Jack) Newton, Norman, all those guys, it's a dream come true for me and it's something that I can't have taken away from me."
