STUDENTS and teachers at St Ursula's College, Kingsgrove, will now have access to new learning facilities following the recent opening of the library, science laboratories and general learning areas,
Barton MP Nickolas Varvaris said the federal government had provided $3.5 million from the Capital Grants Program for the new facilities.
He attended the opening on behalf of Education Minister, Senator Simon Birmingham.
"The Australian government is committed to putting science, technology, engineering and mathematics at the heart of school education," Mr Varvaris said.
"It is critical to our nation's future that more students study science and maths subjects.
"Sport is also about improvement, strategy and fair play. The lessons learnt on the football field, netball court, running track or swimming pool are lessons for life."
Mr Varvaris said the new learning spaces were the latest in education research and would help students learn more effectively.
He said the government was investing a record $69.5 billion — an increase of $4.1 billion — to support government, independent and Catholic schools up to 2018.
It was also strengthening the requirements for teacher literacy and numeracy, and requiring primary school teachers to have specialist skills in science, technology, engineering, maths or languages.
