Fair go for housing
The major developments outlined in your article "Big project lodged for health, housing" (Leader, January 13) indicate that in Caringbah 12 traditional houses will be replaced by 131 apartments (plus medical suites) and in Miranda 14 houses will be replaced by 197 units.
With housing affordability in Sutherland Shire being a major problem, these developments would seem an ideal opportunity for Sutherland Shire Council to require that developers include a percentage of affordable housing within such developments so that low-paid but essential workers (for example, within the health system) can live close to their workplaces.
With the total value of the Caringbah development stated to be $44 million and the Miranda development $79 million it seems to me that there is ample scope for giving a fair go to people on lower wages and for creating a fairer community.
