Residents living in the Penshurst Heritage Conservation Area under the control of Kogarah Council should be made aware that 1 Penshurst Avenue, Penshurst, will be demolished and subdivided into two lots to make way for a new two-storey dwelling on Lot A and construction of a new two-storey dwelling and secondary dwelling on Lot B.
The council approved the development application on December 23.
This historical Halstead house was removed from heritage listing in 1999 making way for the further erosion of heritage items in the municipality.
The property has a historical association with Charles Herbert Halstead, mayor of Kogarah from 1893 to 1894 and from 1908 to 1911.
Halstead lived in the house during this time with his wife Laura. It was one of the first houses built in the heritage area and stands at the pinnacle of the district in terms of heritage.
Kogarah Council has paved the way for further destruction of heritage in the conservation zone and made a mockery of its heritage guidelines.
