Ramsgate business owners are hopeful that an overhaul of the town centre will entice shoppers back.
Rockdale Council last week announced that the first stage of the revitalisation will start in the middle of February.
As part of the changes there will be new car and pedestrian access, new lighting and street furniture.
There will also be a public plaza, shaded areas, extra trees and wider footpaths to encourage outdoor dining.
One-way traffic will also be introduced to improve circulation.
The project is budgeted to cost $7 million.
Business owners had previously said that they have been losing business since Franklins moved out around two years ago.
Metcash bought the site and turned it into an IGA.
Several businesses, including a butcher shop and a delicatessen, then moved out.
Froth owner Andy Omopoulos said he was hopeful the makeover will boost business.
‘’Any change is good,’’ he said.
‘’It will open up parking options and encourage people to stay and shop a bit longer.
‘’Now you’re extremely lucky to find parking. I get here at 4am and I still have to park further up the street.
‘’At the moment it’s just a car park and shops.
‘’It’s just tired.’’
Ichor Constructions Pty Ltd has been chosen to lead the project which will be done in stages to minimise disruption to businesses and residents.
Rockdale Mayor Bill Saravinovski said it will benefit locals and visitors alike.
‘’This is good news for shoppers, residents and local business,’’ he said.
‘’Council is delivering on its promise to revitalise this iconic beach side town centre with improvements that will benefit everyone.
‘’While there may be some inconvenience during construction it will be worth it.’’
The project is part of councils thriving town centre initiative which has already introduced improvements at Bexley North, King Street in Rockdale and Bay Street in Brighton-Le-Sands.
